This app is free-to-use and can run on Windows, Mac OS, Android, and even Linux.
It is no doubt a powerful tool but it can be difficult to use for new users. So we have compiled a FAQ list to help you get started with using balenaEtcher.
Can Etcher Burn Windows ISO?
Yes, Etcher can burn Windows OS image files to both SD cards and USB flash drives. It can also burn OS images of MacOS, Linux, and even Android to make bootable SD and USB flash drives.
Can It Make Bootable USBs Only?
Etcher is not only capable of creating bootable USBs but is also capable of creating bootable SD and hard drives.
How To Download And Install Etcher?
Go to the official website (Link:https://www.balena.io/etcher/) and click on the green download button that says “Download for Windows (x86|x64)”. You can also download Etcher from this website. (Make sure to select the correct version for your operating system.) Click on the arrow beside it to show a list of other downloadables such as a portable version for windows, a version of MacOS and Linux. Select the option you prefer then download. Run the installer once it has finished downloading.
How To Use Etcher?
Once you have downloaded and installed Etcher, simply run the app. You should note that depending on the configurations on your computer, you may want to select “Run as Administrator” when using Etcher.
A simple window will appear once Etcher fully loads. There are three steps in the flashing process for Etcher. To start, click the “Select Image” button. A new window will appear which you can use to navigate to the location of the image file you wish to flash. Some of the image file types Etcher can flash are .ISO, .DMG, and .IMG. The type largely depends on what kind of Operating System you have and what you want to flash.
Next step is to select the SD card or USB flash drive you want to flash your image file to. This process shouldn’t be difficult and should be easy to use.
The final step is to click the “Flash!” button in the main Etcher window. The Etcher app will then proceed to flash the image file of your choice into the directed SD card or USB flash drive. The program will also attempt to validate the flashed image in order to make sure that the newly made bootable SD card or USB flash drive is working as intended.
Why Am I Unable To Select My Drive?
There may be times when Etcher can’t select the drive you want to flash your OS image to. This problem is similar to the previous issue but most of the time the problem here is with the Etcher program. While this issue is rare, it can still happen to you and it can be frustrating to fix.
The best ways to solve this issue is to either uninstall then reinstall the Etcher app into your computer or to use a slightly older version of Etcher. If you still have any of the problems in Etcher, you can try contacting the developers for assistance here. (Link:https://forums.balena.io/)
Why Can’t Etcher Flash?
There can be a number of reasons why Etcher can’t flash your OS image to the SD card or the USB flash drive. Some of the usual issues include compatibility issues, a corrupt OS image file, and insufficient space in the SD card or USB flash drive you want to flash with Etcher.
First, make sure that the version of use for Etcher is the latest version of the application. This is because the latest version is most likely to have the latest features and generally one of the most stable.
Make sure that the SD card or USB flash drive you want to flash is in good working condition. It must also have sufficient space for the OS image you want to flash and that it has no other files within the system. Also, make sure that the file system type of the SD card or USB flash drive is NTFS.
If Etcher is still not able to flash, take note of the error code and try to look for a solution online. You can also use an older version of Etcher just in case the cause of the issue is a new bug introduced in the latest version.
Why Can’t Etcher Find Drive?
There may be times when Etcher can’t find the removable drives that are connected to your computer. This can be caused by various issues within the computer you are using, the version of the Etcher app you have installed, or because of the SD card or USB flash drive you have used.
While there may be no sure general solution, here are some tips you can try to fix this problem.
First, try using a different SD card or USB flash drive. It is most likely that Etcher could not find the drive you want to flash because the drive is not functioning properly or cannot be detected by your computer at all.
If the SD card or USB flash drive you want to flash can be seen by your computer but not by Etcher, it could be an issue with the app. The easiest way to solve this is to uninstall then reinstall the Etcher app. There may have been an issue in the installation process and have resulted in a faulty copy of the program. You can also use a slightly older version of Etcher.
